ten years. that is how long i have been telling my wife i was going to find an uncut early Bronco before they all got cut, lifted, or turned into 80 grand resto mods. i weld for a living here in meridian, i have a lift in my own shop, and i have walked away from probably a dozen of these because somebody took a sawzall to the rear quarters in 1989 and called it a day. so this is a long one.
found the truck on rubiautosales.com in august. 1974 Ford Bronco, 302, 3 speed manual on the floor, Dana 44 up front, 9 inch out back, Dana 20 case. uncut rear fenders on the original body. the listing said the 302 had been rebuilt about 35k miles ago and they had the receipts, and the paint was an older repaint in the factory Bahama Blue, not a color change. listed a hair under 62. the same truck at the january collector auctions has been going 75 to 80 with the buyer premium, and half of those have been cut.
i called them expecting a runaround and got a guy who knew what an uncut Bronco was worth and did not pretend otherwise. he told me the rear main seal was seeping and the wiper motor was dead before i asked about either. then he sent something like 90 photos including the underside, the cowl vent, and the inside of the rear quarters with a flashlight, plus a cold start video.
i was not wiring 62 thousand dollars to a website off photos, so i found a classic Ford restoration shop about forty minutes from the lot and paid them 300 to put it on a lift for a couple hours. the rubi people had no problem with it and had the truck ready when the shop guy showed up. what came back: frame rails solid, body mounts solid, cowl solid, rear quarters solid, floor under both seats solid. he said the body mount bushings were tired and it would want a kit. rear main seal seeping like they said, wiper motor dead like they said, one rear driveshaft u-joint dry and starting to click, and a hairline crack in the dash pad. that was the whole list on a 51 year old truck.
bought it. title came to idaho clean in about two weeks. i put it on an enclosed carrier, 1,100 door to door, because i was not going to let my uncut fenders ride open through a week of interstate gravel. it came off the trailer and idled like a truck with a fresh 302 should.
i will do the seal, the u-joint and the wiper myself this winter and post what it costs. anybody else running an early Bronco or a Scout they got off the rubi lot? curious what the inspection turned up on yours.
